About Laura Hunter
I was first introduced to the concept of creating my own jewelry in 5th grade when my mother brought me to The Shepardess in Old Town, San Diego, to pick some beads for stringing as a summer art project. A fun summer project then turned into making jewelry off and on for me or as a unique gift for friends and family. My talents and time led me in several directions before life led me to have my own business.
My creative path began with a love of fashion, music, dance and photography. At 18, I won “best in show” in the creative photography category at the Del Mar Fair. This success let me to work as a staff photographer at SDSU’s Daily Aztec newspaper. My love of photography and music brought me to BPM Magazine, where my unique style and knowledge of fashion won me the position of Fashion Editor.
The creative energy at the time was inspiring. As the magazine became more successful the staff relocated to Los Angeles, however my life and love were in San Diego. I stayed behind and worked in advertising and publishing learning the ins and outs of many types of businesses. Still needing a creative outlet, I began belly dancing. I am a founder and principal dancer in the Talisman Dance Company.
In 2005, life changed dramatically. My father, my biggest role model, passed away suddenly. Floored and unable to do anything, I took solace in making jewelry and honing the craft though classes. It was healing to work with my hands and create during this time.
A year later, I realized that life was too short to not do something I absolutely love. I stood at the cliff weighing my options for a long time. A good friend advised me that the only way to grow was to leap and spread my wings to fly on the way down.
The jewelry you see on my site is made from love; a love of family, a love of friends, and a love of art, in all its forms. It is my hope that the wearer of this jewelry feels special, unique and loved. I hope my jewelry helps you express your individuality even if you wear the same hat, same suit or the same corporate uniform every day. It’s all about that little flash of you that makes you stand out and feel unique.
They say Coco Chanel owned three suits at the time of her death. How could this be? She is one of the greatest fashion icons of all time! What she really had was style, and most importantly, she knew how to accessorize.
Laura Hunter lives in San Diego, California with her wonderful husband William. They have a Chihuahua and a cat.
